I always joked about it, but I never actually wanted it to happen...

Janine was laid off today, along with a number of other employees in the SF office of LJ, Inc. She has the rest of the week to work and then she's done. They are giving her no severance package and gave her no advance warning of the layoffs. It's rather atrocious.

The first thought I had, and Janine's as well, was: our wedding is only a few months away, between that and our honeymoon, how much are we going to have to cut out? We'll make it work, sure, but still.

Slight change of topic: Dreamwidth.

In the past few months I haven't felt a strong need for an alternative to LJ. SUP was a mystical entity in far-off Russia that didn't seem to cause any problems that I could see. Tupshin as an engineering manager was doing a great job and was active in the open source end of things, which was great. So Dreamwidth fell to a back burner and slowly simmered.

Today, upon finding out that SUP has decided to smash that... well, it puts a renewed emphasis on Dreamwidth. A really strong emphasis.

What exactly does this mean for DW? Let's find out!

I'm so sorry to hear about Janine's situation...:-\ I hope she and you can make the best of things, and I'm sure she will bounce back with a great job in no time.

I hope we don't lose LJ completely, since that's 8 years worth of journal entries I'd lose. Any chance there is a way to export an archive of all entries?

Good luck with your Dreamwidth endeavor!

I like LJBook (http://www.ljbook.com/frontpage.php) and I have a couple friends who use LJArchive (http://fawx.com/software/ljarchive/). They're both pretty easy to use and will back up all of your entries in a matter of minutes.

http://valleywag.gawker.com/5124184/the-russian-bear-slashes-a-social-network is where I came from.

I forget the reason why LJ just had to go to SUP for help, but obviously that was a bad move, considering the result of that endeavor.
I don't know. Would there be any other blogging sites to use, or is this the inevitable end of my blogger habit that I've continually had for the past five years?

Word's getting out about the layoffs, including links to this post, a couple of news pieces, and links to LJarchive, etc.

Best wishes on developing and marketing Dreamwidth.

We don't know each other, but given the way the economy's going right now (and may be going for a while), you might want to put off an expensive honeymoon and do something more local for now. Just my two cents...

Good luck!

You may want to check with your state labor board to see if there is a requirement of advance notice of layoff and/or severance payment in lieu of notice. Best of luck to you both.

Thanks for outing this rather callous and foolish move of SUP.

Frankly, I've been wondering for many months now why I keep having random Russians friending me. No idea who they are, they just friend me. Huh???

Anyways, good luck to you and your SO!

If the company has over 100 employees, I believe they are required to give notice or forfeit salary. Some information is located here...http://www.edd.ca.gov/Jobs_and_Training/Layoff_Services_WARN.htm, but I would call the EDD to make sure.

BTW, it's typical for non-california based companies to violate many CA labor laws, as they are hugely different than other areas of the country and world.

Sorry to hear about this. I hope your wedding goes as well as can be. My husband and I have had to put off our honeymoon, though more due to the fact that it is hard to take one when he is deployed to Iraq. I say take the time to make it what you want it to be, rather than cutting corners to see it happen sooner.

Just wanted to mention that this entry was linked in my LJ, as it seems only right to do so.

I'm also very sorry to hear about the layoffs and hope that things work out okay for you and Janine.
